HOME SERVICE PROBLEMS AND ISSUES
(SLAMMING AND CRAMMING)
SLAMMING
Slamming is when your phone company illegally changes your phone service without your permission.
How Does Slamming Happen?
- Someone calls you and asks you to participate in a survey. This person records the conversation, and if you answer “yes” to any questions, the company uses the recording as “proof”that you agreed to have your phone service changed.
- A company offers to enter you into a drawing, sweepstakes, or some kind of contest. You fill out a card with some of your personal information. Somewhere on the card is an agreement to have your phone company switched.
CRAMMING
Cramming happens when a company puts charges on your phone bill without your permission. These charges may include Internet service, voice-mail, call waiting, and club memberships.
What Can I Do if I’ve been Crammed?
- Save your phone bills and check your bill every month for new charges.
- Ask your phone company if it offers “Bill Blocking” to prevent additional billing without your permission.
