Examples of telephone fraud
- Be careful of the "809" area code: It looks like an area code inside the U.S. but in reality, the "809" area code is located in the Carribean and has high international rates.
- Be careful of call forwarding scams. You may get a message on your answering machine that you have won a prize or money. You are asked to dial the "*" or "#" key followed by a two digit number (such as #-7-9 or #-7-2) and then an 800 number to claim your prize. When you dial this number you are giving someone full access to your long-distance account. They can make calls and bill them to your account.
- Be careful of collect call fraud. Never accept a collect call unless you know who is calling you. The collect call may be coming from a foreign county, which will mean high international rates if you accept the call. The person who made the call will try to keep you on the line as long as possible.
